Early Life

Stanley Kirk Burrell, better known as MC Hammer, was born on March 30, 1962, in Oakland, California. He grew up in an East Oakland housing complex with his mother, a secretary, and father, a professional poker player, as well as eight other siblings. In the parking lot of the Oakland Coliseum, the Burrells sold stray baseballs. Charles Finley, the owner of the Oakland Athletics, hired Stanley, an 11-year-old clubhouse aide and batboy, after spotting him doing the splits and dancing in the parking lot one day.

From 1973 through 1980, he worked as a batboy. To distinguish him from other players, when playing for the A's, fans began calling him M.C. for short. Due to his likeness to Hank Aaron's "Hammering" Hank Aaron, he was given the moniker "Hammer".

Early Career

MC Hammer's "pop rap" performances, which he pioneered in the late 1980s, brought him enormous fame. In addition, he is the first rap artist to have an album certified Diamond. Although many in the rap world consider him to be a sellout because of his mainstream lyrical style and showy dance moves, he remains one of the most popular rappers of all time and an entertainer recognised for his acrobatic moves.

Hammer got his start in rap by performing in local clubs in the Oakland region. He borrowed $20,000 from former Oakland A's players Mike Davis and Dwayne Murphy after a record deal fell through. MC Hammer established Bust It Productions, a record company, with the money he received. To keep the business afloat, he held record sales in his basement and in the trunk of his car. At some point, Bust It Productions changed its name to Bustin' Records, and MC became the company's CEO. Feel My Power, MC Hammer's debut album on his own label, was released in 1987. It sold more than 60,000 copies in its first week on the market. There was some radio airplay for Let's Get it Started and Ring 'Em, which became popular in local nightclubs.
