A lot of people in Europe were nervous about this election, even though it was the same as the French presidential runoff in 2017. France's relationship with the European Union and the West would have been very different if Le Pen had been elected president. At a time when the EU and its allies are looking to Paris for help with some of the world's biggest problems, like the war in Ukraine.

It didn't matter that Macron's plan to make France more global and economically liberal won out over Le Pen's plan to make France turn inward. The 41.45 percent of people who voted for her put the French far right closer to the presidency than ever before.
