Beginnings

Farrokh Bulsara was born on September 5, 1946, in Stone Town, Sultanate of Zanzibar, which is today known as Freddie Mercury (now Tanzania). Seven-year-old Freddie began piano lessons in India, where he grew up with his parents, Bomi and Jer, and sister, Kashmira. At the age of eight, he began attending St. Peter's School, a boarding school in Bombay, and at the age of twelve, he established the Hectics, a rock and roll cover band. Mercury adopted the moniker Freddie at St. Peter's, and he later attended St. Mary's School in Mumbai.
